Neverware CloudReady Breathes Life Into Your Old Laptop With Chrome OS

New York-based Neverware is on a mission to help you get the most out of your old computers. CloudReady, a custom Chrome OS build that it ships can be installed on an existing, old laptop and PC to bring some life into them. The company claims that it has already transformed more than 75,000 Windows PCs and Mac computers worldwide. And it’s getting better with CloudReady getting dual-boot support.

Neverware announced this week a new version of CloudReady that is aimed at schools and individuals who want to make maximum use of their existing PCs and laptops, which are now too slow to properly run demanding operating systems like Windows and OS X. The biggest attraction of CloudReady v45.3 is that it allows you to try the Chrome OS build without having to completely abandon Windows. CloudReady can be installed on a system with an existing Windows 7, 8, or Windows 10 machine provided the machine has UEFI firmware. With most modern Chromebooks and Chrome OS-based PCs sporting modest specifications, even mediocre specifications of an old laptop or PC should be able to run the open source Chrome OS smoothly.

The company claims that a range of laptops including Apple’s MacBook models, Asus EeePC, Dell Inspiron 15, Dell Lattitude E5430, HP Probook models, HP Elitebook, HP Compaq, Lenovo Thinkpad, Lenovo Ideapad, Toshiba Satellite C55-B5100 support CloudReady. The dual-booting functionality, however, is available on certain models, as it requires a special UEFI requirement.

“Dual-boot CloudReady will let us get better use from even our newest computer labs,” said Mike Roberts, Technology Director for Quinlan Independent School District in Texas. “It will give users the faster response and ease of use of a Chrome lab for most daily work, but the ability to reboot into Windows for heavier workloads like graphics or programming.”

CloudReady can certainly come handy to people who want to get more out of their ageing laptops and desktops. It can also be significantly helpful to schools that currently cannot afford to buy new laptops. “The cost of embracing new technologies has been too high for too long,” said Neverware President Andrew Bauer. “We want to remove the limit of just one operating system, so that the power of two platforms can be available to organisations and consumers without buying multiple devices.”

Adobe Creative Cloud Bug Can Delete Files on OS X Computers

A recently released update to Adobe Creative Cloud (v3.5.0.206) has been found to be incorrectly deleting files from OS X-based computers. Adobe has acknowledged the issue, and pulled the update.

Backblaze, a cloud storage service provider wrote last week that a bug in Adobe Creative Cloud’s update was deleting files the “top-most” directory in the root directory for many of its customers. The company wrote the following in a blog post.

“[…] If you were an Adobe Creative Cloud customer on Mac with auto-update turned on (or happened to download that version), as soon as you signed in to Creative Cloud, files from folders within your root directory could have been removed.”

Adobe acknowledged that a bug in the latest update of Creative Cloud made the service delete files from Mac’s root directory. The company added that it has disabled the distribution of the latest update, and is investigating why the update dubbed v3.5.0.206 is triggering the issue. In the meantime, it has released an update v3.5.1.209, which as Backblaze asserts, isn’t causing an issue.

The file deletion is happening when a Mac user logs in to the Adobe service after the update has been installed. A instruction set, reports Backblaze, activates and deletes some content in the root directory. It is not clear if Backblaze is the only service that is affected by Adobe’s bug. Backblaze noted that its users are affected because it stores files in a hidden root folder called .bzvol, which is placed on top-most, and is getting deleted by the bug.

“We typically saw this occur to the user’s top-most (when alphabetically sorted) hidden folder, or to a folder that had a space at the front of its name (a semi-common practice to force a folder to always appear at the top of the list).”

Backblaze, in the meantime, assures that it is alerting users with a pop-up when its users files are deleted. The company has set up a ‘frequently asked questions’ page on its website to assist affected users with recovering their files.

Other cloud storage provider such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Box, and others haven’t reported any such issue. Which could be because they don’t store their user’s back up files in the root directory.

While the companies work on an update, you might just want to ensure that you haven’t installed v3.5.0.206 of Adobe Creative Cloud. You might also want to avoid logging in Adobe Creative Cloud for a while. Or, there is an easier way. You could create a folder with a name “.aaaaaaaaaaaaa” or something similar, which will become the top-most folder.

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have developed computer simulations to determine if a pulmonary valve will fit an individual’s heart, even before the surgery takes place.

Children born with a certain congenital heart defect often need a percutaneous pulmonary valve surgically inserted when they are 10 to 15 years old.

The computer simulations will help determine if that surgery will be successful and if the necessary valve will fit in the individual’s heart.

“To make it simple, it’s like buying jeans. You need to try them on to see if they are going to fit,” saidVittoria Flamini, an assistant professor at the New York University.

“Similarly, the valve might or might not fit – something surgeons would like to know before they perform the procedure,” Flamini said.

The computer simulation, a collaboration between Flamini and Puneet Bhatla, from NYU, involves manipulating images of the patient’s heart sent over by the medical team, a complex process that takes at least a day.

“A lot of medicine involves technology and innovation, and the drivers of medical technology are physicians, because they are interested in solutions to the problems they are faced with,” Flamini said.

While still in the testing stage, the methodology that could spare kids from unnecessary surgery could be ready for rollout in as little as a year, researchers said.

Although this simulation is for a very specific cohort, Flamini expects that eventually it will be used for other types of surgeries.

Researchers from University College London (UCL) have developed new hardware that can give Internet users at home a much faster speed with high bandwidths.

The new hardware can significantly cut the cost of deploying fast fibre connections straight to homes.

While major advances have been made in core optical fibre networks, they often terminate in cabinets far from the end consumers.

The so called “last mile” which connects households to the global Internet via the cabinet, is still almost exclusively built with copper cables as the optical receiver needed to read fibre-optic signals is too expensive to have in every home.

“We have designed a simplified optical receiver that could be mass-produced cheaply while maintaining the quality of the optical signal,” said lead researcher Dr Sezer Erkilinc from UCL’s electronic and electrical engineering.

The average data transmission rates of copper cables connecting homes today are about 300 Mb/s.

“Our technology can support speeds up to 10 Gb/s, making it truly futureproof,” Dr Erkilinc added in a paper published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology.

The team simplified the design of the optical receiver, improving sensitivity and network reach compared to existing technology.

Once commercialised, it will lower the cost of installing and maintaining active components between the central cabinet and homes.

The researchers are now investigating the laser stability of the receiver which is an important step to building a commercial prototype of the system.

Huawei Expected to Enter PC Market With Matebook Laptop at MWC 2016

Chinese technology conglomerate Huawei could enter the PC business as soon as next week. The company has posted a media invite, in which it seems to be teasing the arrival of a “new” product category for launch on February 21. The product in question is widely believed to be the long-rumoured Matebook 2-in-1 notebook which doubles as a tablet.

The caption in the invite reads, “The new style of business.” The image also showcases a stylus, which hints at the tablet nature of the upcoming device. The invitation was shared by Huawei CEO Richard Yu on Chinese social network Weibo. The device is expected to be the long-rumoured Matebook, which features both Android and Windows operating systems.

This is in line with multiple reports from earlier that claimed that Huawei was planning to launch its first laptop at the Mobile World Congress event. A report claimed that the supposed Matebook will be powered by an Intel-made processor. The report added that the keyboard on the supposed device can be detached.

Chatter about Huawei’s intentions to get into the PC business has been doing rough since last year. A company executive last year expressed his displeasure with the current PC market. Months later, the company was spotted trademarking “Matebook.”

Mostly known for its network equipment devices, Huawei is one of the largest technology companies in the world. The company came into the spotlight last year when it partnered with Google to launch theNexus 6P smartphone. Huawei made a profit of $5.5 billion (roughly Rs. 371,922,365,528) last year on a revenue of $46.5 billion (roughly Rs. 3,144,853,292,223), if that helps paint an accurate picture of the company’s size and presence. The company employs over 170,000 people.
